Notre Dame Girls Secondary School in Sunyani, Ghana

Lenora Tucker, School Sisters of Notre Dame shares the following regarding the school and its library:

Notre Dame Girls Secondary School is located in Sunyani, Ghana, West Africa. Opened in 1987, the school presently has an enrollment of 587 students. It was originally established as a day school for girls of Sunyani town and the surrounding villages. Now it also has a large hostel which allows the girls who come from a distance the opportunity to attend the school. Sunyani is in the center of Ghana in the Brong-Ahafo region. This region has statistically one of the lowest averages for female education in Ghana.
For a library, we use a storage closet measuring 12ft x 12ft which becomes crowded when there are just 4 students inside. A second room permits 12 students to sit a table and read or study. Approximately 1,500 books fill the shelves of our pseudo library; however, except the recently donated set of encyclopedias, few of these books are suited for student research and learning. Since English is the second language for our students, it is really very important that we provide good reading material which we can then encourage them to read. Ghana has only in the past decade put any emphasis on Girl-Child education and we at Notre Dame try to repond with an appropriate education for living in today's global village. We really need a library building that provides a proper setting for our students in which to learn and do research. Ideally it will include a diverse selection of suitable books and some computers with internet access. Such a library building will be a dream come true.
